Small Desk Organisation: 7 Ideas That Leave Room to Work

A small desk works best when the main activity has a clear space and everyday items have easy-to-reach homes. Start by removing what you do not use at the desk, then measure what is left. Buy storage only after you know the space and the items it needs to hold.

You can try this reset with paper, a ruler and containers you already own. The aim is a desk that is easy to use and restore, rather than a surface filled with matching organisers.

1. Clear the desk and name its main job

Choose the activity you need most often: laptop work, handwriting, craft projects or electronics. Put the equipment for that activity back first. Open the notebook or position the keyboard as you would actually use it, leaving space to move your hands.

Sort everything else into three groups: used every day, used occasionally and belongs elsewhere. A desk organiser should solve a storage problem for the first two groups, not become a permanent home for the third.

2. Measure the space you can genuinely spare

Measure after placing the essential equipment. Include the clearance needed to open drawers, reach sockets and move a mouse. Mark your available storage area with a piece of paper. If that rectangle interrupts your normal work, try another location before looking for a product to fill it.

3. Give everyday items one small home

Keep a pen, current notebook and other frequently used items together. A shallow tray can work for flat objects; a small upright container may suit pens. Try an existing container for a week and notice whether finding and returning items feels easy.

A useful rule is one clear purpose per container. “Items I use for writing” is easier to maintain than “anything that is on the desk”.

4. Use a movable basket for occasional supplies

Place less-used stationery or project supplies in a basket that can move to a shelf when you need a clear surface. Group related supplies so you can bring out one activity at a time. Keep tiny electronics in appropriate labelled component storage rather than loose among pens and metal objects.

Before choosing a basket, check both its outside footprint and usable inside dimensions. Handles and sloping sides can affect how it fits and what it holds.

5. Make a paper template before ordering

Maisonup’s ribbed storage organiser basket is listed with dimensions of 220 × 180 × 90 mm. For an initial layout test, cut a 22 × 18 cm paper rectangle and place it where the basket would sit. Treat this as a footprint check, then confirm the current product dimensions and required clearances before purchase.

Leave the paper in place while you do a short normal task. Can you still open your notebook? Reach your mouse? Move the chair? This quick exercise helps you judge the size in context instead of relying on a product photograph.

6. Reserve a clear route for cables

Decide which edge cables should follow and keep that route separate from frequently moved storage. Leave enough slack to connect and disconnect devices comfortably. Avoid packing chargers into a closed organiser or blocking equipment ventilation; follow the device manufacturer’s instructions.

If lighting takes up your remaining work area, consider its position alongside storage. Our guide to warm and cool white lighting explains how to think through a room’s lighting choices.

7. Finish with a two-minute reset

At the end of your session, return tools to their containers, remove unrelated items and leave the main work area ready. If the same objects repeatedly stay out, change their storage position. The layout should match your habits rather than require constant effort.

Before buying an organiser

  • Measure the available footprint and height.
  • List what the container will hold.
  • Check internal dimensions if you need a specific object to fit.
  • Decide whether it stays on the desk or moves to a shelf.
  • Test the layout using a paper template or a container you already have.

Once you know the size and purpose you need, browse Maisonup’s décor and organisers. Start with the piece that solves the clearest problem, then adjust the layout before adding more.
